about
'if and when'
i love mlr for norns. mlr is what made me want a norns shield and it continues to offer me new ways to write music. and the teenage engineering op1 has something magical about how it lends itself to the mlr paradigm.
when i began, i was hoping to experiment with only acoustic samples; mallet hits to a glockenspiel, a violin and a ukulele; at least that was the original intent. i wanted to record a few bits, see how they interact and keep it simple. but then, some things from the past started to appear and pulled me away from the present, in a different direction; i went along.
i have a video performance of this piece on my YouTube channel. the video performance is all live and in one take, but i added orchestral strings later, and then brought in a motif from earlier in the performance. my eventual goal is to able to do something like that when performing. i also love incorporating sounds from nature, especially rain. so you'll hear some of those sounds in here too.
